If you ever have to write technical documentation for the Department of Defense, you may want to start with the interface standard. As well, you may wish to skim DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE HANDBOOK GUIDE TO THE GENERAL STYLE AND FORMAT OF U.S. ARMY WORK PACKAGE TECHNICAL MANUALS
-aka the 300 page monster-aka MIL-HDBK-1222C .

If you need to do wiring or system diagrams, check out DOD-STD-863

The best work I've seen to date on user interface design: Mil Spec 1472F

Then you really might want to check out psgml mode for emacs
